As soon as I saw this zine on the Pioneers Press site, I knew I had to have it. Even though it was only six pages, and that isn’t many pages, I could not pass up a zine about a classic horror film.
(Note: if you write a zine about classic films, or horror films, or classic horror films, I will buy it. True story.)
The zine is 1/4 size and well-printed on glossy paper. The film is black and white, so naturally the zine is as well. It features screenshots from the film (directed by the great F.W. Murnau and starring Max Schreck) that have been modified to appear as if the titular vampire is just trying to be nice. In one shot, he’s carrying a grocery bag, and the caption reads, “I brought snacks!”
The zine is fun, but I would have loved to see it carried on for a few more pages. 6 pages is just…not much, especially for a zine that is primarily images. Still, for $1.50, it’s hard to complain. If the folks at Eternia Press (credited in the zine, though no author is mentioned) decide to expand this in the future, I’d love to check it out.
